Automation of boiler houses

Boiler automation is a key element in building an efficient engineering system. Manual control "by eye" has long been a thing of the past. Temperature sensors, thermostats, mixing and control valves with electric drives or thermostatic valves are not a complete list of devices used in modern boiler houses. Previously, the presence of automation was a sign of an industrial boiler house. Nowadays, a complex of smart automation is a mandatory element of any boiler house.

The main goals of automating boiler house and process control systems are to:

  • Increase efficiency and cost-effectiveness
  • Improving the safety

Increasing the efficiency of the system is essentially a reduction in costs at the facility. Reduced fuel consumption, reduced operating costs, reduced maintenance costs. Without the use of modern automation tools, the result cannot be achieved.

The boiler house or technological process is controlled by the boiler house or workshop personnel using control panels, which are usually located directly in the boiler house. The most popular operations in a boiler house are changing the temperature of the heat carrier for different circuits of the heating system. The staff also adjusts the steam pressure (for a steam boiler house). In modern control panels, such operations are performed on an interactive menu via an intuitive graphical interface. The operator can:

  • change the temperature in the boiler,
  • switch the pumps on or off,
  • Adjust the temperature in the mixing valves (for different circuits).

All of these operations are performed with a wave of the hand.

Boiler house automation ensures high safety.

Human safety is above all. A mandatory requirement in the construction of any boiler house is the presence of a safety automation system. Excessive concentrations of carbon monoxide or gas leaks can be fatal for personnel and the boiler house as a whole. Therefore, automatic systems with sensors, actuators (for shutting down/shutting down) and sound and light warning devices are installed to detect such problems in a timely manner.

Modern remote access technologies make it possible to monitor and control a boiler house remotely. In principle, remote control can be arranged for any type of boiler. The easiest way is to control a gas boiler. The processes for a liquid fuel boiler are more complicated. It is also difficult, but possible, to arrange remote control of a solid fuel boiler with an automatic fuel supply (for example, pellet).

The following functions can be performed remotely:

  • monitoring of boiler house parameters available to the operator
  • switching on/off the main equipment
  • switching to a backup system
  • Management of heating modes in different circuits
  • Boiler temperature management
  • receiving signals about critical problems in the system
    • overheating
    • exceeding the permissible pressure
    • not enough fuel
    • gas leakage
    • Excessive concentrations of carbon monoxide

And this is not a complete list of options for setting up remote boiler room control. Like the boiler house, it is possible to set up monitoring of technological processes.

  • steam temperature control
  • steam pressure in the system
  • compressed air pressure
